Lykes Ranch

Brighton, Florida

Founded by Dr. Howell Tyson Lykes and his seven sons in 1900, Lykes Bros. Inc. has been a leading Florida-based agribusiness for more than a hundred years and is a founding ranch of Florida Cattle Ranchers. What began as a 500-acre operation near Brooksville, FL, has grown to more than 610,000 acres in two states.

Today, Lykes is a diverse enterprise that includes cattle, citrus, farming, forestry, hunting, and land and water resource management. Lykes also continues its commitment to responsible stewardship and community involvement.

After a century of prosperous growth and business evolution, the company is still guided by the basic principles upon which it was founded: hard work, honesty, integrity, and family. The following core values are infiltrated into all areas of operation:

  • Conduct all activities with integrity, responsibility and competence.
  • Honor the Lykes heritage of good stewardship practices and community involvement.
  • Produce quality goods and services that result in economic success and industry leadership.

Lykes’ ranch and cattle operation is located in south central Florida, west of Lake Okeechobee. Its management philosophy is centered on the vigilant stewardship of its herd and the land on which it grazes. Enhanced herd nutrition, herd health protocols, herd genetics, and comprehensive land management are the core components of herd and land stewardship. These core management areas are the foundation for high-quality cattle and beef production.

In addition to its cattle stewardship, conservation, and environmental stewardship are at the forefront of Lykes’ mission and business philosophy. Currently Lykes’ ranch operations consist of more than 41,000 acres of conservation easements; 26,000 acres of water retention, detention, and storage projects; and more than 3,000 acres devoted to the USDA’s Wetlands Reserve Program. Additionally, all of Lykes’ agricultural operations are enrolled in the Florida Department of Agriculture’s Best Management Practices for Water Quality Program.

As stewards of both land and cattle, the dedicated, hardworking, and skilled employees at the ranch are the key to balancing the complex system of animal and land stewardship in a sustainable manner. As a testament to their dedication and the Ranch Division’s success, Lykes has received numerous national and state awards including the 2010 National Cattlemen’s Beef Quality Assurance Award, 2009 National Cattlemen’s Foundation Vision Award, 2000 Region II – National Cattlemen’s Environmental Stewardship Award, and 1999 Florida Cattlemen’s Association Florida Environmental Stewardship Award.
